Brett is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the UW School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences working in collaboration with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA) at the Alaska Fishery Science Center. His research investigates objective, standardized, and defensible methods for quantifying uncertainty related to fishery-dependent data collected by observers. His current project involves refining methods for calculating the input sample size for fishery-dependent length and age frequency data used in Alaskan stock assessments. The aim is to improve the representation of this data type to achieve more accurate population estimates and support sustainable fishing. His core collaborators are Andre Punt, Pete Hulson, Jennifer Cahalan, and Ben Williams.

Brett received a PhD in Quantitative Marine Science from the University of Tasmania, Australia, in 2023. His research focused on quantifying the impacts of inaccurate historical catch and growth information on integrated stock assessment outputs, focusing on the species banded morwong and Patagonian toothfish.
